The situation
The Hofburg Congress Center hosts congresses, balls and conferences in the historic halls of Vienna's former imperial palace. Every hall has a capacity limit set by the authorities, and on an event day guests move constantly between halls, foyers and staircases.
A count at the door gives a number after the fact. For safety and planning, the operations team needed to know how many people are in a hall now – and to be able to show afterwards how guests moved through the building.
What baiond does there
Anonymous people counters at the hall entrances count who comes in and who leaves. baiond turns the counts into a live occupancy per hall and sets it against that hall's limit.
- Live occupancy per hall – in the Space System, on the dashboard and on the phone
- Capacity alerts: the team is notified automatically as soon as a limit is reached
- Movement patterns are recorded and turned into reports for planning and for the authorities
No images leave the counters – the platform only ever sees numbers.

Since we started using baiond, we have been capturing visitor numbers in real time and meeting regulatory requirements precisely. The system automatically alerts us when capacity limits are reached and documents movement patterns – a real game changer for planning and safety. For my team it means less stress, more clarity and better decisions. I would not want to work without this tool anymore.

- Occupancy N3 78%
- Threshold 80%
- Inflow 410/min
Not yet. The concourse behind gate N3 is at 78 % occupancy, just below the defined threshold of 80 %, while inflow is running at 410 people per minute. All other entrances and concourses remain balanced.
Open the second turnstile row at N3 and redirect arriving home supporters to N2. Continue monitoring during peak ingress.
Would you like me to investigate further?
Looking closer. This is what the data shows:
Possible reasons- Gate N3 has been open for 35 minutes; gates N1 and N2 opened 10 minutes later.
- The kiosk queue in the N3 concourse is blocking one third of its width.
- Away supporters are routed through N3 only, as defined in the event plan.

Frequently asked questions
What happens when a hall reaches its capacity limit?
baiond compares the live occupancy of each hall with its limit. When the limit is reached, the team gets an alert – on the dashboard and on the phone – and can close an entrance or guide guests to another hall.
Is counting visitors in a venue GDPR-compliant?
The counters used here register people passing, not who they are; no images leave the device. The platform only receives counts per entrance and hall, which as a rule is not personal data. Your data protection officer makes the final call for your site.
Does this work in a listed building?
Most counters run on battery and send by radio to the baiond Gateway, so there is no cabling through historic walls. They sit above a door frame and can be removed again with minimal intervention.
